Current Happenings...

  • National Health Center Week
National Health Center Week 2008 (August 10 – 16), is a national campaign dedicated to recognizing the service and contributions of America’s Community Health Centers.   "America's Health Centers: Home of America's Health Care Heroes" is the theme for National Health Center Week 2008.  The special focus for this year’s National Health Center Week (NHCW) is a new health center plan to create more health care homes in the future for the medically underserved and to honor the health care “heroes” working at existing health centers today.  Also, for the first time ever, NHCW sets aside two days to focus on special populations who are often left outside of the mainstream health care system. Health Care for the Homeless Day will be observed on Wednesday, August 13th, and Farmworker Health Day will be observed on Thursday, August 14th, 2008.

For more about the ACCESS for All America plan visit www.nachc.com.  For more information about National Health Center Week visit www.healthcenterweek.org.

  • National Immunization Awareness Month
August is recognized as National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). The goal of NIAM is to increase awareness about immunizations across the life span, from infants to the elderly.

August is the perfect time to remind family, friends, co-workers, and those in the community to catch up on their vaccinations. Parents are enrolling their children in school, students are entering college, and healthcare workers are preparing for the upcoming flu season.

For resources and more information, visit www.cdc.gov/vaccines.

A Letter From the Program Director
Rajesh Parikh, MD, MPH
Director, CHRC

Welcome to the Community Health Resource Center (CHRC) web site.  With grant support from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the Department of Family Medicine in Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, in collaboration with the Illinois Area Health Education Center Program (AHEC), has created a diverse selection of materials focusing on community health, cultural competency, and care for the medically underserved populations.  The resource center offers support to our faculty for curriculum development and serves as a tool for disseminating our curriculum to preceptors.

We recognize the unique challenges involved in practicing and teaching in medically underserved areas. The CHRC provides resources to assist clinicians in this mission. In our curriculum, we actively promote the development of skills necessary to work with culturally diverse patient populations. The major goals of the CHRC are to support our community partners, expand community-oriented primary care, and teach our students to provide care in a culturally competent manner.

Please feel free to contact us with your comments and suggestions at CHRC@midwestern.edu.

Sincerely,DO Logo
