Resident for
Effective Shelter Transitions (REST) is a volunteer-run,
non-profit
homeless shelter that benefits the destitute of northern
Chicago.
Accordingly, the REST Clinic provides free basic health care for this
population. It aims to provide health screening and treatment, TB
testing, minor wound care, health care counseling, and medical
referrals for acute presentations. Its volunteer staff consists of one
physician, social workers, and a few medical students. All medication
and equipment are donations.
The REST Clinic
can provide medical students with a truly unique
training
experience:
treating the homeless population of a major city. These patients are
exceedingly complex; many present with multiple medical as well as
psychosocial concerns. Moreover, the clinic underscores the importance
of performing a detailed history and physical exam because of the lack
of diagnostic services.
We are in need of
student volunteers. Clinic currently is held Tuesday nights from 6 to 8
PM. We are trying to add another clinic day as well. Please contact
either Michael
Neville (MS2) or REST Clinic with questions.
