This book chronicles the
story of Lia, a Hmong child with a seizure disorder, and the clash
between the family's traditional health beliefs and American
medicine. Her American doctors and her family both wanted what
was best for Lia but lack of understanding between the two cultures
led to tragedy. The story is a moving account of the
potentially tragic outcomes of not understanding the cultural
context of health care. Lia's story is compelling. The
author interposes chapters describing traditional Hmong beliefs and
the American medical system with the chapters chronicling Lia's
story. Highly recommended book for anyone working with other
cultures or immigrants. (M. Kirkegaard) |
