Since 2001,
students from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine have been
providing volunteers for the Rainbow Clinic in Aurora, IL. The clinic is offered
as a service for the homeless population staying at the Hesed House
(659 South River Street, Aurora, Illinois) and is run by a 100%
volunteer staff. The patient population ranges from newborns to
the elderly and the care provided is acute, episodic, and chronic.
Both student and
physician volunteers are needed on Wednesday nights. Students
generally provide triage services (vital signs and history taking), but
may also dispense medications, shadow physicians, or assist in the paper
work associated with a free clinic. The diverse patient population
and their complaints provide medical students with a great opportunity
to not only help the community, but also to gain first hand experience
of many of the disease processes discussed during classes.
Students
interested in volunteering should contact
Nicole Chiampas. Physician volunteers are always
needed, even if for just one night a year.
Interested D.O.’s, M.D.’s or students should contact
Nicole Chiampas
or Marilyn Scott, Clinic
Director.
