Womens' Health Issues
Joanne Rousseau, MS2

On Monday, April 24th, second year medical student, Joanne Rousseau spoke to a group of Homewood-Flossmoor High School students about womens' health issues.  Joanne discussed many important topics that relate to women, including heart disease, osteoporosis, cervical cancer, breast cancer, domestic violence and eating disorders.  The group of girls  brainstormed on ways to make healthy lifestyle changes including proper diet and exercise, and overcoming peer pressure. The group talked about how important good decision making is to their overall health and well-being.  The students should be applauded for their interest and dedication to living a healthy lifestyle.  It was a great learning experience for all involved!

Obesity, Nutrition and Exercise Workshop
Mohammed Alo, MS4

On February 25th, Mohammed Alo, a fourth year CCOM student, gave a two-hour workshop at the Muslim Youth Center to a group of women on obesity, nutrition and exercise.   Most of the audience came from a Middle Eastern background and lived in the part of Chicago where there is a high concentration of Palestinians, on 95th and Harlem. Throughout the presentation, Student Doctor Alo was able to intersperse some Arabic words and references to cultural foods that his audience enjoyed and found humorous.

Alo comments, “Obesity has become a favorite topic of mine and I thoroughly enjoy speaking on this topic. I have adopted obesity as my mission in health care, ever since I did a project on obesity during family practice. I wish I could end obesity, but I have too many forces working against me.”

Serving the Underserved Group Project
Autumn Grove Apartments, Downers Grove, IL

Several students from CCOM recently hosted a health education seminar for residents and children at the community center of the Autumn Grove apartment complex in Downers Grove, IL.  Students talked about healthy eating and exhibited examples of how unhealthy lifestyles can affect our bodies.  The program was very well-received by the families at the center.

Sigma Sigma Phi
Grade School Education Program

Sigma Sigma Phi, the National Osteopathic Honors and Service Fraternity is dedicated to giving back to our community and spreading our osteopathic philosophies.  Simply stated, Sigma Sigma Phi is a student run organization dedicated to community service and education.  This year (2005-2006) Sigma Sigma Phi visited a grade school, teaching students in an interactive fashion.  We spent time familiarizing students with our tools-removing the mystery and fear of doctor’s equipment, teaching the basics about the heart and lungs, identifying bones and discussing smoking and drug safety.  Answering the questions of second graders, seeing their faces light up as they hear their hearts beat, and watching the vast majority of the class emphatically raise their hands when asked, “Who wants to be a doctor?” creates a rush only possible through educating and giving back to the community.
