  • Unnatural Causes … is inequality making us sick?
A four-hour documentary series exploring socio-economic and racial inequalities in health in scheduled to air on PBS in April 2008 in the Chicago area.  This new documentary series crisscrosses the country exploring how the social conditions in which Americans are born, live and work profoundly affect health and longevity, even more than medical care, behaviors and genes.  The series challenges fundamental beliefs about what makes Americans healthy – or sick – and offers new remedies for an ailing society.  Unnatural Causes is produced by California Newsreel in association with Vital Pictures, Inc. and presented by the National Minority Consortia of public television.  For more information, visit www.unnaturalcauses.org.  Check local listings for air dates and times in your area.

  • National Minority Health Month ~ A Healthy Baby Begins With You
Join the U.S Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health in celebrating April as National Minority Health Month.  The Office of Minority Health has selected A Healthy Baby Begins with You as the theme for April 2008.  Currently infant mortality rates among African American babies are double the rates of the general public.  As a result, the month of April is being used to focus building public awareness and increasing education through prevention resources to reduce the high infant mortality rates among African Americans.  Preventing infant mortality is one of the Office of Minority Health’s efforts to end health disparities among minorities  For more information and educational resources on National Minority Health Month campaign, A Healthy Baby Begins with You, visit the HSS Office of Minority Health’s website at http://www.omhrc.gov/templates/browse.aspx?lvl=2&lvlID=182

  • National Donate Life Month
As of March 31, 2008 there were 98,634 individuals on the waiting list to receive organ, tissue, marrow, and organ donations.  April has been designated as National Donate Life Month to dedicate 30 days for people to make a special effort to celebrate those who have saved lives by becoming a donor and to raise the importance of donating.  The need for organ transplantation is continuously growing.  You are encouraged this month to follow the fine example of those who have generously saved lives by becoming an organ, blood, tissue, or marrow donor.  For more information on National Donate Life Month, becoming an advocate, or to get up to date statistics on organ donations, visit http://www.organdonor.gov/get_involved/donatelifemonth.htm

A Letter From the Program Director
Rajesh Parikh, MD, MPH
Director, CHRC

Welcome to the Community Health Resource Center (CHRC) web site.  With grant support from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the Department of Family Medicine in Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, in collaboration with the Illinois Area Health Education Center Program (AHEC), has created a diverse selection of materials focusing on community health, cultural competency, and care for the medically underserved populations.  The resource center offers support to our faculty for curriculum development and serves as a tool for disseminating our curriculum to preceptors.

We recognize the unique challenges involved in practicing and teaching in medically underserved areas. The CHRC provides resources to assist clinicians in this mission. In our curriculum, we actively promote the development of skills necessary to work with culturally diverse patient populations. The major goals of the CHRC are to support our community partners, expand community-oriented primary care, and teach our students to provide care in a culturally competent manner.

Please feel free to contact us with your comments and suggestions at CHRC@midwestern.edu.

Sincerely,DO Logo
